Smoking Dog Design started out as an interest in cleaning old tobacco pipes as a means to cheaply try different styles of pipe to suite my own personal taste (and originally called Fireground Pipes). This ultimately led to the desire to go beyond simple estate cleaning and get into pipe making. Utilizing estate pipes as an opportunity to gain knowledge in various styles, I worked to develop my own pipes after experiencing a lacking amount of American handmade, filtered pipes which is what I personally smoke.

All pipes are currently made from briar with options for acrylic and ebonite stems. All stems are made from rod stock and designed with integrated tenons. Most pipes can be designed to accommodate 6mm filters or non-filter and I often make a mix of both. Other accessories are made of various raw material.

In 2024, we’ve started putting focus on fountain pens. As much of the tooling, material and skills developed from pipe making cross over to pen making, this was a new product to produce in the shop rather naturally. The feel of a well made fountain pen can’t be understated and we hope folks enjoy what we have to offer here.

My ultimate goal is to make high quality, well finished products that I enjoy creating and you enjoy using. I do this as a passion and hobby outside of my personal career.

As time moves along, we look to create other handmade items in our workshop both pipe related and non-pipe related. Hopefully we get to work together on something for you to enjoy!

Why “Smoking Dog Design”? Well, we have an adorable basset hound who likes to run our house and it couldn’t be a more fitting name.
